Clinical Bacteriology

Samples

Survey Frequency

Includes 5 simulated clinical samples (not lyophilized) of variable complexity for culture and susceptibility testing, 1 smear for Gram staining, and 1 case scenario mainly to address extra analytical issues in the laboratory. Includes single and multiple organisms, aerobic, anaerobic. At least one of the challenges requires susceptibility testing and reporting.

Simulated samples include blood, wounds, urine, genital, sterile sites, stools, throat/ear/eye swabs, screening samples, etc.

Samples per survey: 5 culture samples, 1 smear for Gram stain, 1 Case scenario (Paper or video challenge)

4 surveys per year

Ships: May, August, November, February

Analytes/Parameters Monitored

Isolation, identification, and reporting of aerobic/anaerobic organisms, mixed cultures, negative cultures. Susceptibility testing and interpretation. Clinically relevant reports. Notification to Public Health and/or Infection control.

Group results for each challenge are provided with an educational critique generated by expert technical committee. (see an example critique)

Supplementary Gram Stain

Samples

Survey Frequency

Simulated smear for Gram staining. This program is complementary to Clinical bacteriology. Simulated samples are usually sterile fluids such as CSF, joint fluids, pleural fluids, etc.

Samples per survey: 2

2 surveys per year

Ships: August, January

Analytes/Parameters Monitored

Gram staining, reading and interpretation of cellular and microorganism component.

Group results for each challenge are provided with an educational critique generated by an expert technical committee. (see an example critique)
