Stool: Cyclospora cayetanensis –  Shipped July 05, 2021

Educational Highlights

  • Standard laboratory procedures, using a sequential iron haematoxylin and acid-fast stain or modified iron-haematoxylin stain for ova and parasites should be able to identify C. cayetanensis in stool samples.
  • Contaminated food is the main source of infection. Contaminated fresh produce—such as berries and leafy greens, and pre-packaged/bulked vegetable products have been cited as the source of outbreaks in Canada and Europe.
