HISTORY

This challenge was sent as a simulated skin scrapping sample from a 10 year old immunosuppressed patient, new immigrant. Laboratories were expected to isolate and identify Trichophyton violaceum.

  • Trichophyton violaceum is a slow growing dermatophyte which matures in 14-21 days.
  • T. violaceum is endemic in tropical regions, especially Sub-Saharan Africa; it is rare in the United States and Canada.
