Joint Fluid: Candida parapsilosis – Shipped August 03, 2021

HISTORY

This challenge was sent as a simulated joint fluid from a patient with recurrent arthritis in knee. Laboratories were expected to isolate and identify Candida parapsilosis and perform susceptibility according to the laboratory’s capacity.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from MY2108-1

  • A fluorogenic assay of beta-glucosidase activity may be useful for rapid differentiation of C. parapsilosis from other Candida species.
  • The incidence of C. parapsilosis has dramatically increased during the last decade. In fact, reports indicate that C. parapsilosis is often the second most commonly isolated Candida species from blood cultures.
