Wound: Sporothrix schenckii – Shipped August 04, 2020
HISTORY
This challenge was sent as a simulated Wound swab sample obtained from a gardener w/ulcerated lesion. Laboratories were expected to isolate and identify Sporothrix schenkii
MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from MY2008-3
- The fungus is thermally dimorphic. The conversion of mycelial form to the yeast-like form is essential for confirmation of identification.
- Rose gardeners, farmers, miners, horticulturists, and armadillo hunters have an increased risk of infection thus it is important to record occupational activities of patients with suspected infection.
