Blood: Trichosporon asahii – Shipped November 26, 2018
HISTORY
This challenge was sent as a simulated blood culture. Laboratories were expected to isolate and identify Trichosporum asahii.
MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from MY1811-1
- T. asahii, although rare is a serious fungal pathogen in blood stream infections, so its antifungal susceptibility pattern is important for appropriate primary therapy.
- Information on the antifungal susceptibility is important for laboratories to understand that echinocandins perform poorly with this fungus, while susceptibility to voriconazole is well established.
