Blood: Candida tropicalis – Shipped September 12, 2016

HISTORY

This challenge was sent as a simulated blood culture sample. Laboratories were expected to isolate and identify Candida tropicalis. Within their abilities, laboratories were also expected to perform antimicrobial susceptibility.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from MY1609-1

  • Correct and prompt identification of pathogenic fungi, causing systemic infections and candidemia, plays an important role in the application of suitable therapy.
  • In many centres C. tropicalis is the second most common Candida species isolated.
