Toe Nail: Scopulariopsis brevicaulis – Shipped April 11, 2016
HISTORY
This challenge was sent as a simulated toe nail sample. Laboratories were expected to isolate and identify Scopulariopsis brevicaulis.
MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from MY1604-3
- Non dermatophyte molds (NDM) rarely cause skin infections but some species have been implicated in nail infection.
- Confirmed diagnosis of NDM requires more than one laboratory analysis. Consistent isolation of an NDM species from a series of samples increases the likelihood that the organism is a true pathogen.
