Midstream Urine: Mixed flora  – Shipped February 07, 2022

HISTORY

A simulated midstream urine sample collected from an 84 year old female in long-term care was sent to category A laboratories. Participants were expected to report the sample as mixed flora and not to process any further.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from M214-1

  1. Mixed growth of uropathogens on urine culture should be reported with a total colony count.
  2. Mixed growth of uropathogens on urine culture should be reported without identification of individual organisms and a new submission of an appropriately collected specimen should be recommended.
