M213-4

Wound: Clostridium sporogenes  – Shipped November 01, 2021

HISTORY

A simulated wound swab collected from a 38 year old car crash victim with a leg wound was sent to category A laboratories.
Participants were expected to isolate and identify Clostridium sporogenes.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from M213-4

  1. When referring a Clostridium to another facility, the report to the clinician should include sufficient descriptive information to provide some guidance while awaiting for definitive identification and/or antimicrobial susceptibility results.
  2. MALDI-TOF, where available, can provide a fast, more accurate identification when compared to conventional tests or commercially available test kits.
