Vaginal/rectal screen swab: Group B Streptococcus – Shipped August 09, 2021

HISTORY

A simulated vaginal/rectal screen sample collected from 24 year old pregnant female was sent to category A laboratories. Participants were expected to isolate and report the presence of Group B Streptococcus

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from M212-2

  1. Carriage of group B Streptococcus is a risk factor for early onset infection in the newborn, which is life threatening.
  2. Detection of carriage can enable the use of intrapartum prophylactic antimicrobial therapy that reduces the risk of early onset infection (but not late onset infection).
