HISTORY
A simulated external ear swab sample collected from a 27 year old female swimmer with sore ear was sent to category A laboratories.
Participants were expected to isolate and identify Haemophilus influenzae.

- Otitis externa in adults can be associated with Haemophilus influenzae. In this sample, all laboratories using a variety of testing formats had no difficulty with the identification of this bacteria in pure culture.
