Endocervix swab: no Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolated – Shipped August 14, 2017
HISTORY
A simulated endocervical swab collected from a 19 year old college student with history of treatment failure for previous gonococcal infection was sent to category A and B laboratories.
Participants were expected to report the sample negative for Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from M172-2
- Pathogen negative reporting should be used to indicate that specific pathogens were looked for in relevant samples. Normal flora should not be specifically listed in cultures for N. gonorrhoeae.
- Culture for N. gonorrhoeae is most often performed in cases of possible treatment failure due to resistant strains of N. gonorrhoeae.
