Urine (in and out catheter): >100 x 10^6 cfu/L Enterococcus faecium – Shipped August 17, 2017
HISTORY
A simulated urine sample collected from a 85 year old community care home female patient with dysuria was sent to category A, B, and C laboratories.
Participants were expected to identify Enterococus faecium, report colony count and perform susceptibility testing.
MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from M172-1
- Susceptibility testing of Enterococcus species can be clinically important in isolates from patients living in long term care.
- For clinical decision making, susceptibility results are more significant than speciation for Enterococcus isolates from urine.
