The challenge was sent to category A and B laboratories. The sample was a simulated stool obtained from a 27 year old female patient with traveler’s diarrhea.
Laboratories were expected to isolate, identify, and report Plesiomonas shigelloides.

- Travelers may present with diarrhea caused by organisms that are unusual in the community in Canada.
- Although Plesiomonas shigelloides is an uncommon enteric pathogen it was readily identified by most participating laboratories.
