Neck Abscess Aspirate: Fusobacterium nucleatum  – Shipped November 2013

HISTORY

The sample was a simulated neck abscess aspirate obtained from a 19 year old female with neck pain.

The sample was sent to category A laboratories which were requested to process and report as per their usual protocol. Participants were expected to isolate, identify, and report Fusobacterium nucleatum as well as perform or refer susceptibility testing.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from M33-5

  1. It is important to culture aspirates from head and neck sterile site collections anaerobically as well as aerobically.
  2. Anaerobes can cause severe and life threatening infections by themselves.
