Wound swab: normal skin flora – Shipped November 2011
A simulated wound swab obtained from a 43 year old female with skinned knee (outpatient) was sent to category A and B laboratories.
Participants were provided with the results of the Gram smear: rare/1+ neutrophils, 1+ gram positive cocci, 1+ gram positive bacilli. Participants were expected to report normal skin flora.

- Technologists should recognize which organisms are likely to be skin flora.
- If organisms are listed, an interpretive comment should be included to indicate the organisms are considered skin flora or non-pathogenic.
