HISTORY

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from M113-1

  1. Cefazolin is an “A” category antibiotic that CLSI recommends for testing and reporting for Enterobacteriaceae (cefazolin is an IV formulation and is appropriate for hospitalized patients). However, cephalothin is the “U” category antibiotic that CLSI recommends for testing and reporting for Enterobacteriaceae from urines. Cephalothin is predictive of the oral agents (e.g. cephalexin) that patients with UTIs would most likely be treated with, as outpatients or when they are discharged home on oral antibiotic therapy.
