Liver abscess: Candida krusei – Shipped August 2011

HISTORY

A sample simulating liver abscess material obtained from a 27 year old female in-patient with a liver transplant and fever was sent to category A laboratories.

Participants were expected to isolate and identify the isolate as Candida krusei.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from M112-5

  1. Candida krusei is an important pathogen in the immunocompromised host as in this challenge.
  2. Its intrinsic resistance to antifungal agents such as fluconazole makes it even more important to report to the species level.
