Gram – CSF: 3+ (6-10/oif) neutrophils –3+ (11-50/oif) gram positive cocci (Streptococcus pneumoniae) – Shipped August 09, 2021

HISTORY

A simulated CSF sample collected from a 68 year old female in-patient was sent to category A and C1 laboratories.

Participants were expected to report the presence of neutrophils and gram positive cocci.

 

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from GS212-2

  1. The presence of white blood cells in the CSF is useful to support the diagnosis of meningitis.
  2. Gram stain of CSF demonstrating organisms gives rapid information of the cause of meningeal infection.
