MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from G192
- Close dog and cat contact is the key factor in acquiring this organism — in particular, scratches, bites, and licking of human wounds.
- Capnocytophaga canimorsus may be missed on wound cultures due to normal skin overgrowth. The organism is characteristically isolated from blood.
