Gram – Joint fluid:  gram negative diplococci and neutrophils  – Shipped November 2014

HISTORY

A simulated joint fluid collected from a 15 year old female patient with septic arthritis of the knee was sent to category A, B, C, and C1 laboratories for Gram staining

Participants were expected to report the pres-ence of neutrophils and gram negative diplococci.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from G143

  1. Infectious arthritis is a medical emergency.
  2. Accurate reading and comprehensive interpretation of Gram stains as well as the prompt report of results are very important to initiate appropriate treatment while waiting for culture results.
