Joint fluid: Candida krusei – Shipped April 13, 2015
This challenge was sent as a simulated joint fluid sample. Laboratories were expected to isolate and identify Candida krusei. Participants were also expected to perform and report susceptibilities or refer the sample for testing.
MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from 1504-1
- C. krusei grows at 25°C, 37°C, and 42°C on Sabouraud dextrose agar, but fails to grow on media containing cycloheximide.
- Fungal arthritis by Candida species is rare and usually occurs secondary to hematogenous spread from a primary site of infection, such as an indwelling central venous catheter or the gastrointestinal tract.
