HISTORY

This sample was sent as simulated scalp scrapings and hair. Laboratories were expected to isolate and identify Microsporum audouinii.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from 1501-2

  • M. audouinii is an exception in the Microsporum genus as it seldom forms conidia.
  • M. audouinii is an anthropophilic, highly contagious dermatophyte. The infection is primarily transmitted through human-to-human contact and is generally observed in children over the age of 6 years and before puberty.
