Corneal scrapings: Fusarium species  – Shipped April 2014

HISTORY

This sample was sent as a simulated cornea scraps. Laboratories were expected to isolate and identify Fusarium species.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from 1404-3

  • Corneal scrapings obtained from the eye are the preferred sample to diagnose microbial keratitis.
  • Keratitis due to filamentous fungi (Fusarium, Aspergillus, phaeohyphomycetes and Scedosporium apiospermum) most commonly occur after trauma, although previous use of corticosteroids and contact lens wear are gaining importance as risk factors.
