This sample was sent as a simulated wound. Laboratories were expected to isolate and identify Rhodotorula species.

  • Commonly regarded as non-pathogenic, Rhodotorula species have emerged as opportunistic pathogens. Fungemia represents the most common form of infection by Rhodotorula, typically occurring in patients with cancer receiving chemotherapy or antibiotics through indwelling intravenous catheters.
  • Contaminated catheters and intravenous solutions have been identified as the most common sources of Rhodotorula infection.
