1301-3

Wound: Penicillium species – Shipped January 2013

HISTORY

This sample was sent as a simulated forearm swab obtained from a patient with a severe forearm burn. Laboratories were expected to isolate and identify Penicillium species.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from 1301-3

  • Penicillium marneffei is the only member of the genus that is unambiguously implicated in human disease.
  • A report from a patient with a severe forearm burn with an infected ulcer that grows Penicillium species might reveal information about the presence of the fungus in the environment, the probability that the isolate may represent contamination, and the need to identify the source of the contamination.
