HISTORY

This sample was sent as a simulated bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL). Laboratories were expected to isolate and identify Lichtheimia (Absidia) species.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from 1201-3

  • L. corymbifera is a relatively rare cause of human zygomycosis. Clinical presentation of L. corymbifera includes cutaneous, pulmonary, rhinocerebral, gastrointestinal, and disseminated forms.
  • L. corymbifera can cause invasive disease in compromised hosts.
