  • Increased sensitivity is obtained by staining the concentrated specimen with acid-fast stains (modified combination stain, Kinyoun).
  • Other detection methods include PCR, immunofluorescence microscopy, in situ hybridization, and real-time quantitative PCR. These methods are mainly used for environmental or epidemiological research purposes.
