Nail: Trichophyton rubrum – Shipped September 2011

HISTORY

This sample was sent as a simulated nail sample. Laboratories were expected to isolate and identify Trichophyton rubrum.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from 1109-2

  • T. rubrum is an exceptionally variable organism and many of its characteristics either overlap with other dermatophytes or are inconsistent.
  • T. rubrum is an anthropophilic dermatophyte, as it almost exclusively infects humans. Infections are more common in adults and men than in children and women.
