Sputum: Malbranchea species – Shipped January 2011

HISTORY

This sample was sent as a simulated sputum sample. Laboratories were expected to isolate and identify Malbranchea species.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from 1101-4

  • Only one case of sinusitis associated with Malbranchea has ever been reported. The significance of Malbranchea is that it is similar microscopically to Coccidioides.
  • Unlike Coccidioides immitis, Malbranchea does not produce spherules containing endospores, it is negative for C. immitis exoantigen test and/or DNA test probe.
