HISTORY

This sample was sent as a simulated nail sample. Laboratories were expected to isolate and identify Trichophyton mentagrophytes.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from 1101-2

  • Sabouraud’s salt agar is an excellent test for differentiating T. mentagrophytes from T. rubrum as colonies of T. mentagrophytes, unlike T. rubrum, grow very well on this medium and usually produce a distinctive dark reddish-brown reverse pigment.
