Stool: Entamoeba coli, Endolimax nana, Blastocystis species

Educational Highlights

  • The identification of intestinal amoebae depends on the size and shape of trophozoites and cysts and on the number of nuclei and aspect of karyosome and chromatin.
  • The combination of E.coli, E.nana and Blastocystis species, a mix of three non-pathogenic (or low pathogenic) enteric parasites even if symptomatic in the North American community, it would generally be accepted as suggestive of travel exposure only, and not associated with parasite related disease.
