Educational Highlights

  • Studies show that Blastocystis should be considered as a species complex, comprising 13 subtypes, at least 9 of which found in humans; some of these sub-types produce virulence factors and are linked to disease.
  • Blastocystis species are commonly found in healthy individuals as well in patients with gastrointestinal symptoms. In general, prevalence of infection is higher in developing than in developed countries.
