Educational Highlights

  • The primary method of laboratory diagnosis is the detection of eggs in stool (mansoni, indicum and japonicum groups) or urine (haematobium group).
  • Concentration with formalin-ethyl acetate is recommended for the detection of eggs in stools. In endemic areas, the Kato-Katz thick smear has shown to be sensitive and effective.
