Educational Highlights

  • Preserved specimens can be examined using the routine stool formalin-ethyl acetate concentration method and Cryptosporidium oocysts can be detected using special staining techniques.
  • Enzyme-immunoassays (EIAs) for detecting oocyst antigens have been growing in popularity since Cryptosporidium antigen detection commercial kits became available for use with fresh or fixed stool specimen.
