MY2104-3

Wound: Rhizopus speciesShipped April 06, 2021

HISTORY

This challenge was sent as a simulated wound sample obtained from a patient with post surgery upper leg soft tissue infection. Laboratories were expected to isolate and identify Rhizopus species.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from MY2104-3

  • From a clinical perspective, the reporting of a Zygomycete in this clinical setting (a post-surgical wound sample) should prompt a repeat specimen to ensure the causal nature of the wound, and aggressive intervention by the clinical personnel. These fungal species are particularly adept at invading tissues. They occur most commonly in compromised patients, and, if untreated are associated with significant morbidity and mortality.
  • Zygomycosis is described almost exclusively in patients with compromised immune systems or metabolic abnormalities.
