HISTORY

This challenge was sent as a simulated urine sample. Laboratories were expected to isolate and identify Candida glabrata.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from MY1801-1

  • More than half of the Candida species isolated from urine samples are C. albicans while C. glabrata represents 8-36% of those isolates.
  • Some isolates of C. glabrata may be intermediately resistant to all azoles and about 20% of strains develop resistance during therapy or prophylaxis with fluconazole.
