HISTORY

A simulated wound sample collected from a 22-year-old Hodgkin’s patient with a dog bite and an infected leg wound was sent to category A laboratories.

Participants were expected to isolate and identify Capnocytophaga canimorsus.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from M192-4

  1. Capnocytophaga species require enriched media and increased CO2 or anaerobic conditions for primary growth to occur.
  2. Capnocytophaga canimorsus follows Pasteurella multocida in its frequency of occurrence in dog bite infections. It also follows directly behind Streptococcus pneumoniae in frequency.
