Blood: Salmonella Paratyphi A  – Shipped February 11, 2019

HISTORY

A simulated blood culture sample collected from a 25 year old male with a history of travel to Dhaka was sent to category A laboratories.

Participants were expected to report Salmonella Paratyphi A and report susceptibility results.

 

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from M184-5

  1. Salmonella Paratyphi A is an important cause of enteric fever, especially in travelers.
  2. All Salmonella isolates should have the serovar determined for Public Health follow up.
  3. Susceptibilities should always be done on Salmonella isolated from blood.
