Wound: Nocardia species – Shipped February 11, 2019
A simulated wound swab collected from a 58 year old leukemia patient with subcutaneous abscess was sent to category A laboratories.
Participants were expected to report Nocardia species.
MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from M184-3
- Nocardia species may be missed with routine laboratory methods since it can require extended incubation and/or selective media for detection; therefore, beading or branching gram positive bacilli in the direct smear can be key to the diagnosis.
- Nocardia is an opportunistic pathogen of great concern in immunocompromised patients due to the increased incidence of dissemination.
