M181-5

Peritoneal fluid: mixed anaerobes (Bacteroides fragilis, Bacteroides uniformis, Peptosptreptococcus magnus)  – Shipped May 14, 2018

HISTORY

A simulated peritoneal fluid collected from a 23 year old male knife-wound victim was sent to category A laboratories.
Participants were expected to report the presence of mixed anaerobic bacteria.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from M181-5

  1. Anaerobic bacteria derived from the large intestinal flora are common pathogens in intra-abdominal sepsis, particularly if the bowel wall has been penetrated.
  2. Specific identification of all anaerobic isolates in a mixed infection is not practical and delays reporting.
