M174-3

Wound: Escherichia coli – Shipped February 13, 2018 –

HISTORY

A simulated wound collected from 32 year old with Crohn’s disease and abdominal wound was sent to category A and B laboratories.
Participants were expected to identify Escherichia coli report susceptibility testing, and re-port to infection control (IC).

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from M174-3

  1. Identification of ESBL –producing Enterobacteriaceae, including E. coli in this challenge was performed very well. Most laboratories are capable of identifying these strains from clinical specimens.
  2. There is some variability in measuring the clinical and infection control significance of these bacteria in clinical specimens.
