Sputum: Haemophilus influenzae  – Shipped November 06, 2017

HISTORY

A simulated sputum sample collected from a 64 year old smoker was sent to category A and B laboratories.

Participants were expected to isolate and report Haemophilus influenzae.

 

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from M173-3

  1. Haemophilus influenzae is an important cause of exacerbations of chronic bronchitis.
  2. Members of the normal flora should not be reported by name as clinicians may infer that clinical significance is being implied.
