Bronchoalveolar Lavage: Cryptococcus neoformans  – Shipped August 14, 2017

HISTORY

A simulated broncheoalveolar lavage (BAL) collected from a 38 year old male lymphoma patient was sent to category laboratories.
Participants were expected to identify Cryptococus neoformans.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from M172-5

  1. Cryptococcus is an important cause of disease in immunosuppressed patients in the community.
  2. If a yeast isolated from an invasive specimen is suspected to be Cryptococcus species, reporting the suspicion can provide useful information to the clinician.
