Endocervix swab: no Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolated  – Shipped August 14, 2017

HISTORY

A simulated endocervical swab collected from a 19 year old college student with history of treatment failure for previous gonococcal infection was sent to category A and B laboratories.
Participants were expected to report the sample negative for Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from M172-2

  1. Pathogen negative reporting should be used to indicate that specific pathogens were looked for in relevant samples. Normal flora should not be specifically listed in cultures for N. gonorrhoeae.
  2. Culture for N. gonorrhoeae is most often performed in cases of possible treatment failure due to resistant strains of N. gonorrhoeae.
