M172-1

Urine (in and out catheter): >100 x 10^6 cfu/L Enterococcus faecium  – Shipped August 17, 2017

HISTORY

A simulated urine sample collected from a 85 year old community care home female patient with dysuria was sent to category A, B, and C laboratories.
Participants were expected to identify Enterococus faecium, report colony count and perform susceptibility testing.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from M172-1

  1. Susceptibility testing of Enterococcus species can be clinically important in isolates from patients living in long term care.
  2. For clinical decision making, susceptibility results are more significant than speciation for Enterococcus isolates from urine.
