Blood: Enterococcus gallinarum – Shipped November 07, 2016
HISTORY
A simulated Blood Culture sample collected from a 45 year old in ICU with suspected endocarditis was sent to category A laboratories.
Participants were expected to isolate, identify and report Enterococcus gallinarum; laboratories were also expected to perform and report susceptibility testing on this organism.
MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from M163-5
- Entercoccus species considered as potential VRE should be differentiated by species and vancomycin MIC to best categorize the isolate for epidemiology and infection control purposes.
- These enterococci that are intrinsically resistant to vancomycin at low concentrations are not considered a significant infection control burden.
