Sputum: normal flora – Companion to G162 – Shipped August 15, 2016

HISTORY

A simulated sputum sample collected from a 72 year old patient with suspected community acquired pneumonia (CAP) was sent to category A and B laboratories.  Participants were expected to report normal flora.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from M162-2

  1. Technologists should recognize which organisms are likely to be normal oropharyngeal/respiratory flora.
  2. Identifying and reporting isolates which are known to be normal flora in sputum samples is discouraged.
