Intra-abdominal abscess: Bacteroides fragilis  – Shipped 15 February 2016

HISTORY

A simulated intra-abdominal fluid collected from an 18 year old male in-patient 3 weeks post-appendectomy operation was sent to category A laboratories. Anaerobic culture was requested.

Participants were expected to isolate and report Bacteroides fragilis. Susceptibility testing was not required.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from M154-4

  1. Bacteroides fragilis group is a key pathogen in intra-abdominal infections.
  2. MALDI-TOF MS is an efficient and inexpensive technology useful for the identification of anaerobic bacteria (specifically Bacteroides fragilis group) in routine laboratories and is capable of producing an identification 24 hours earlier than most traditional phenotypical tests.
